How Long Does a Contractor Estimate Take? Real Timelines

How long should you wait for an estimate?
Different question, and the one more people are actually asking. Not how long the estimate lasts, but how long it should take to arrive.
Small job, no site visit: same day or next. A room repaint, a door swap, a half day of labour. The contractor already knows what it costs. If a quote for work like that takes a week, the delay is telling you something about how the rest of the job will go.
Anything needing a site visit: two to three days after the visit. Measuring takes an hour. Writing it up takes twenty minutes. The gap is scheduling, not effort.
Jobs waiting on supplier pricing: up to a week. Custom cabinets, engineered materials, anything a distributor has to quote first. A good contractor tells you this up front instead of going quiet.
Past a week with no word: follow up once, then move on. Not because they are bad at the work. Because a contractor who cannot get a number to you in a week is either too busy to take your job properly or not interested in it, and both answers cost you the same.
If you are the one sending estimates and you recognise yourself in that last paragraph, the fix is not working harder. It is not writing the document from scratch every time.
